West Virginia Breeders' Classics[edit]
In 1987, NFL Hall of Famer Sam Huff organized the first West Virginia Breeders’ Classics. Local favorite Onion Juice won the inaugural running and the state’s first $100,000 purse.
- Biggest race of the day is the $500,000 West Virginia Breeders' Classic.
- Total purses for the day combine for a total $1,000,000.
Charles Town Classic[edit]
In 2009, it inaugurated the Charles Town Classic for older horses running a distance of one and 1/8 mile. The purse was 'tiered' and was determined by the graded status of the winner. The purse's range was from between $500,000 and $1,000,000. Researcher won the 1st and 2nd Charles Town Classic races. In 2013, the purse was increased to $1,500,000 with the winner receiving $1,000,000, making the Grade 3 Charles Town Classic one of the richest Thoroughbred race contested in U.S. surpassed only by the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup World Championships. The race has attracted top-class performers including Game On Dude and Shared Belief.
Graded events[edit]
The following Graded events were held at Charles Town Races in 2019.
Grade III
Other facilities[edit]
Hotel[edit]
Also on the property is a 153-room hotel, The Inn at Charles Town, and several dining facilities including: a food court, sports bar, fine dining restaurant, and the Skyline Terrace which overlooks the track. However, while a hot buffet breakfast is served at the hotel, the previously mentioned dining facilities are not located in the hotel. The property offers a shuttle between the hotel and casino/race track for its patrons.
Table games[edit]
On December 5, 2009, a second referendum was held on table games and this time voters approved the referendum to allow table games at the venue. As of July 2, 2010, the facility, for years known as 'Charles Town Races & Slots,' was renamed 'Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races'.
Sports betting[edit]

The Hollywood Casino at Charles Town is a relatively new addition to a historic thoroughbred horse racetrack which brings in hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Today the gaming facility at Charles Town Races features a full, vegas-style casino which includes table games and electronic games. In addition, it has a full on-site hotel resort and a racetrack. The racetrack at Charles Town was built in 1933 during the great depression, but the vegas-style casino here was just added a little over 10 years ago. The casino addition and expansion came about when Penn National Gaming bought the property and invested a reported $175,000,000 into the new facilities; much more than the $165,000 originally spent building the racetrack over 70 years ago.
Casino at Charles Town Races
The Hollywood Casino located at Charles Town Races features a large selection of slots and other electronic games such as video poker. It is also equipped with a poker room (learn more in next section) and various table games. The table games offered here include blackjack, craps, mini baccarat, roulette, let it ride, three card poker, big six wheel, pai gow, four card poker and Ultimate Texas Hold’em. Unlike some racinos in other states, the facilities in West Virginia generally offer full fledged table games (i.e. not electronic) which is the case at Hollywood Charles Town.
All in all, the casino here has roughly 2,700 slot machines and 100+ tables games which were added in 2010. The slot machines here have a nice range of denominations. When walking the casino floor you’ll come across penny slots, quarter slots and dollar slots. Within the high limit areas, slots are offered in denominations ranging from $5 to $100 which makes this casino great for high-limit slot enthusiasts.
On top of the sheer number of individual machines available, the casino at Charles Town also has a wide range of game types to choose from. This means you can find essentially every electronic game that exists today. Whether you are looking for high limit Wheel of Fortune or a favorite one-off slot, you are likely to find it here. There are well over 70o unique electronic games available, which you can find a complete list of on their website here.
Racetrack and Charles Town Races
Because the racetrack is the sole reason behind a casino existing at its current location, Charles Town Races is a top notch facility which commonly runs over two hundred races per year. It is considered one of the finest in the country, and rightfully so. The track is comprised of a six furlong thoroughbred course that stretches for 1 1/18 miles. Each year it is host to many prestigious races including the notorious Charles Town Classic which often features a purse well over $1 million.
Player Program
The Hollywood Casino at Charles Town is part of the Marquee Rewards Program which I believe is a part of Penn National Gaming, Inc. Aside from the location at Charles Town, they also have many other facilities across the United States, including additional “Hollywood” properties along with other notable facilities like The Tropicana in Las Vegas. If you are a seasoned gambler, it will do you well to sign up for a card here. This will enable you to receive promotions, free-play and other perks. That’s not to mention if you ever visit vegas you can use the marquee card at one of their other properties.
Restaurants and Bars at Hollywood
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town does have an O.K. offering of food options. It is not amazing in this respect, but it does certainly offer up enough variety to satisfy you for a few days. Below is a full list of restaurants located here. It is worth noting that you must be over 21 years old to enter the Epic Buffet, Final Cut Steakhouse, Skybox Sports Bar, Food Court and 9 Dragons.
9 Dragons: Offering Asian-style food from Sushi and Seafood to Barbecue.
Epic Buffet: The Epic Buffet offers everything a buffet should, from seafood and ribs to salads and other healthy options.
Final Cut Steakhouse: Your standard fancy steakhouse.
Skybox Sports Bar: Has tons of televisions and is a great place to eat, drink and watch sports.
Skyline Terrace: The Skyline Terrace has views of the racetrack and offers seafood, and more American style foods.
Food Court: Many “fast-food” options for quick bites.
Hotel, Resort and Amenities
When you compare the hotel facilities at Charles Town Races to other resort-style casinos across the country, they do not have much space. The hotel at Charles Town offers up just 150 rooms, which compared to many other casinos is not much at all. The hotel, along with much of the casino and racetrack is however located beside the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the Shenandoah Valley which can make for a relaxing weekend getaway. Free “continental breakfast” is included with hotel stays as well which is a plus. It is worth noting, however, that the Inn at Charles Town Races is located on the premises but is not directly attached to the racetrack or casino. They do have shuttles running on a regular basis for transportation however.
